Founded in 2020 and launched in 2021, Atlantic & Sound had designs well underway at its first conception back in 2019. Julia Christ, founder and president of Atlantic & Sound, was busily working on ideas and designs for fun Long Island apparel and accessories, but what she didn't have was a logo, brand or even a name for the company she was starting.
She knew that the designs would be fun, colorful and playful and the company had to match.
The Atlantic & Sound Wave Icon
"The first thing I knew was that it couldn't clash with the designs," Christ said when first creating the Atlantic & Sound logo. "The logo needed to compliment but not outshine the actual designs on the clothing and decor. I knew that the logo itself couldn’t use the iconic outline of the Long Island map."
"Besides so many other Long Island companies having logos with the distinctive island at the forefront, the decision to not use it was mostly because so many of the products themselves would have the island," Christ continued. "I felt that having the Long Island outline in the logo itself would conflict with the apparel’s design."
Beyond the obvious wave motif fitting for a nautical island, the Atlantic & Sound logo's real inspiration is the infinity symbol.
"For me, the twin waves represent a lot of things from Long Island – the twin forks, the two shores, both North and South, the two bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and the Long Island Sound – but the most significant inspiration is the infinity symbol," Christ stated.
The Long Island born-and-raised native continued, "Timelessness, boundlessness, balance, infinite love – these are the things I think of when I think of Long Island and the home I’ve built here. I know a lot of locals feel that way and are inspired by that love; the logo is the embodiment of that."
Deciding the Look & Feel
The idea behind Atlantic & Sound was to bring a new voice to Long Island apparel and accessories.
"Funny, humorous, love. These are the characteristics I wanted to bring to the table with the Atlantic & Sound designs. Obviously there would be designs including water motifs and nautical themes – we are an island of course – but I didn’t want only that," Christ said. "There are so many other fun and witty things distinctive and specific to Long Island. The brand needed to embody that."
With bright, playful photography and color palette, the Atlantic & Sound brand and website exudes spirited love and fun for Long Island life with apparel representing that joy. Check out the below vibrant mood board showcasing that inspiration.
The Final Piece
One of the last items that was decided was the company name – surprising, right? For a very long time, the Long Island apparel company was just referred to by Christ as "Long Island Clothing".
"I spent months and months mulling over the name of the company. It was one of the hardest decisions during the entire process of launching," Christ said. Having a professional background in design and marketing, Christ knew how important this decision was. "This is what the company would be known for. The ultimate way to distinguish it. You can relaunch a logo or a brand identity or a website but relaunching a name? That's extremely difficult to do. The name had to count."
Ultimately, the name was inspired by the already-designed wave logo. "I had my on-going list of possible names. It was at the point where I thought, 'Ok. I’m almost ready to launch and this company still doesn’t have a name.' That’s how late the name was decided!" Christ mused.
When describing that instant she knew, "it was a lightbulb moment". She was surprised it took so long to surface. "The Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound define our landscape, infinitely circling, making us an island. The logo already paid homage to them; it was fitting that the name did too."
